Squall's clear mind and sense of responsibility lead others to trust and follow him. Even though everyone agrees on how difficult Squall can be, staff and students admire him, and he is eventually appointed commander of Balamb Garden. History:
Squall was born to Raine Loire in the village of Winhill, but she died shortly after his birth. His father, Laguna Loire, never knew Raine was pregnant, as he was in Esthar saving his adopted daughter Ellone from the tyrannical sorceress Adel's clutches. After Raine passed away, both Squall and Ellone, whom Laguna had sent back to Winhill, were sent to an orphanage on the Centra continent and Laguna never learns of his existence.
Squall grew up in the orphanage run by Edea Kramer. Despite the presence of other kids his age, Ellone was his closest friend, and he affectionately referred to her as his "Big Sis," although it is unknown whether he knew about their actual bond. One day something unexpected happened and a dying sorceress from the future appeared at the orphanage along with a teenage Squall. The dying sorceress passed on her Sorceress Power to Edea, a sorceress herself, and then died. The teenage Squall told Edea he's a SeeD and is puzzled Edea has never heard of it, as Squall claims SeeD was Edea's idea the first place. Edea tells the teenage Squall he is in the wrong time, and Squall thus disappears back into the time portal. Puzzled by these events Edea comes to the conclusion that the orphan boy Squall will grow into a powerful warrior who will one day defeat an evil sorceress, and in order for this prophecy to be fulfilled she will need to start an organization known as the SeeD in order to train Squall strong enough to one day face off with her. Edea gets her husband, Cid Kramer, to start the Garden and the SeeD as per her instructions. As SeeD is being trained as an anti-sorceress force and Edea is a sorceress herself, Cid and Edea decide they can no longer stay together and Edea must go into hiding with all the orphans who are not admitted to the Garden or adopted. Ellone is one of these children. Further, Ellone's unique ability to send a person's consciousness back in time puts her in danger from those who would want to exploit her, and she is put under the protection of a group of older orphans called the White SeeD.
No one told Squall why "Sis" left, and he assumed she had abandoned him. Squall developed a defensive mechanism that made him an emotionally detached, highly cynical and introverted boy who wished to go through life without emotional links and dependencies, so he would not have to suffer the pain of being left again. This is the source of his solitary and somewhat antisocial nature throughout most of the game.
As Squall himself theorizes, he was never adopted due to his already difficult personality, so sometime around the age of six Squall was admitted into the newly constructed Balamb Garden to train as a SeeD. He chose to train with the gunblade, which is a difficult weapon to master and takes years of training. He quickly found a rival in Seifer, who mirrored him in many ways including the use of a gunblade and a remarkable aptitude for combat.
Eleven years later Squall is known as a "lone wolf" among his peers. His superiors, such as his teacher Quistis Trepe, regard him as difficult to deal with, but greatly respect his natural talents. The rivalry between him and Seifer has become common knowledge amongst the Balamb students. Due to Squall's use of Guardian Forces his memory has weakened, remembering only the feelings of abandonment he felt when Ellone left, but no longer remembering Ellone herself. Squall is near the end of his education and, after an eventful field exam, graduates along with Selphie, Zell and Nida.
RP sample:
Squall had fought against Seifer right before school had started, and Seifer had slashed his face right before the class even started. Squall was bleeding from the wound that was going to leave a scar. Ellone had came to the infirmary, and smiled at him. "Hello Squall it has been a while." Ellone said. Squall had stayed quiet. Ellone had finally left the infirmary. He was afraid that to lose people. Then Quistis had came into the infirmary "You got into a fight with Seifer, come on then time for class." Quistis said. Squall had came to the classroom, and stayed quiet. Squall had came to the final exam, and he had to fight Ifrit. Quistis had asked him why he gotten into a fight with Seifer. "It was really sparring that got out of hand." Squall said.
