A small creature was hopping through the city of Luca, thinking away to himself. White fur covered his little form and a red ball above his head swung back and forth as he bobbed up and down. The little winged creature was indeed a Moogle; a race of cat-like animals. This one, Kain, was originally from Alexandria but had travelled around the world until he ended up here in Spira. Luca to be exact.
There was a sporting event going on, one that Kain didn’t know of, something the locals referred to as Blitzball. He wasn’t sure what it was, but it didn’t matter, he was here to see a leader of the Yevon religion. As he understood it, they were the ones that allowed Summoners to go on a Pilgrimage to defeat the merciless Sin. And that was exactly what this cute little Moogle wanted to do. Kain went and spoke with a bald man that was one of these leaders, a Maester of Yevon, but Kain didn’t catch his name. Everyone else seemed to know who he was and assumed that the Moogle did too. He didn’t want to be rude, so kept quiet about his lack of knowledge.
“I wanna be a Summoner, Kupo!”
Kain said with a huge smile as he stared up at the bald man before him. But he was rejected.
“You need a Guardian”
That’s what he was told. There was a much longer version of this conversation but the rest was irrelevant. Basically, he required someone to protect him on his journey. But he didn’t know anyone that could do that for him. Everyone he knew was either back at Alexandria working the Mognet (a Moogle mail delivery service) or out on their own adventures. He needed to find someone else. But who…?

Laroth sat and stared in amazement as he watched the players swimming through the orb of water floating in mid air; Laroth had never witnessed Blitzball before that time and had placed a large amount of Gil on the match. Suddenly it dawned on him as the first goal was scored effortlessly that he had placed the bet on the wrong team; the Besaid Aurochs. Goal after goal was scored by the Luca Goers, the ball just flew past the Besaid Keeper; he never even touched the ball once.
At the end of the game the score was 9 – 0 and Laroth had lost all of his wealth. He sat there for a while as it sank in, all the Gil he had made in the past on bets had gone on one game, and he no longer had anything. Slowly Laroth stood up turning his head he found that he was the only one left in the Stadium. Laroth sighed and gradually headed towards the exit.
As he emerged in the streets of Luca the sun hit him, much hotter than he had anticipated after being sat in the shade. Laroth’s right hand came up and covered his eyes from the blinding rays of the sun, looking around as his eyes adjusted Laroth then stepped over to a wall and lent his upper body against it, he then folded his arms. Letting out another sigh he stood there thinking of how he would get home, but little did he know that day would have him meet a little friend…little being a key word…

The Moogle stood still in the streets, simply staring ahead of him as he fell deep into thought. None of the others in the street appeared to even notice Kain all the way down at knee height. Sometimes it was quite peaceful, but sometimes it was unbelievably irritating to be so small. Though, at the moment, Kain wasn’t thinking about how tall he was. No. He was thinking about how he was going to get himself accepted as a Summoner.
A Guardian, eh? What would be good traits for a Guardian, Kain wondered. A few ideal qualities passed through his mind;
‘He would have to be someone Moogle-friendly, someone who looked like a fighter, someone that looked like the guarding type… Someone that looks exactly like that guy!’
Kain thought as he suddenly snapped back to reality. His eyes set on a human that was walking by with a huge sword on his back. A sword like that would be great for fighting off monsters or fiends. He just had to convince him to become a Guardian…
“Hey, you with the big sword, Kupo!”
Called a surprisingly high voice from the tiny Moogle as he bounced over to the masked man. He had just stopped at a wall not too far from Kain, but it took him a few seconds to skip over there with his lack of limb length…

Laroth kicked his right foot over to the left crossing his legs whilst humming the chocobo theme. He hummed to himself quietly in an attempt to cheer himself up; the tune reminded him of the good old days when he was winning on the races. But alas it was no use, not even the thoughts of the big running birds didn’t help to lift his mood.
Suddenly, a high pitched voice called from behind Laroth, he turned his head to see no one behind him. Had someone shouted at him then ran off? Or hidden from his line of sight? Turning back Laroth stared into the distance. Laroth assumed that this was some child playing a practical joke, so he simply ignored it, if they where to call again he would simply stand there. And what the hell was “Kupo” supposed to mean exactly, he pondered.

Kain was confused at first. The man looked round and then back again. He must have missed the Moogle so far down on the floor. Damn his height! Sometimes he just wished that Moogle’s weren’t so small. Being ignored wasn’t exactly the best feeling in the world, even if it was accidentally. But he would have to get the man’s attention somehow. Calling again might work;
“Kupo!”
The Moogle cried out to him. Though, it suddenly occurred to him that it would probably have the same useless effect as last time. The swordsman would probably hear it and ignore it. Kain stood at Laroth’s feet and looked up at him with huge smile spread across his face. He bounced up and down with springing of his feet, waving his arms a bit as his tiny little wings flapped around frantically.
“Down here, Kupo!”
This time, hopefully he would realise what was happening. That Kain wasn’t trying to annoy Laroth, but was struggling to get his attention…

That word, “Kupo”, ran through Laroth’s head, he tried to think what it could mean. Perhaps it was a derogatory term here, after all it was used at the end of the sentence as though he was being called it. Or perhaps it was simply like turrets and the child couldn’t help it. But no matter what things Laroth thought of it didn’t matter, he would never know unless he asked, and that involved asking someone, and Laroth wasn’t much of a people person.
That high pitched voice then called “Kupo” again from behind Laroth, that time he simply ignored it. Standing perfectly still as though he hadn’t even heard it, Laroth then coughs. But then the voice called from in front of Laroth, looking down he saw a little cat like creature flapping its arms around; shout “Down here” and ending its sentence with “Kupo” again. Laroth pushed himself off the wall and uncrossed his arms and legs, stood up straight he looked down at the bizarre individual; staring for a few seconds Laroth then spoke,
“What?”
He asked bluntly in an almost aggressive tone; not even asking a name, or saying hello. Laroth just wanted to know what it was they wanted, and why they were bothering him. It was such a small being, yet was already causing a big annoyance for Laroth.

Yes, he looked down and saw Kain… Though, he didn’t really seem particularly happy about it. The little creature covered his face with his left hand as Laroth spoke in an aggressive and mean tone to him, hiding from the words as if they could physically hit him. As Kain slowly moved his hand aside, he peered beneath his arm to make sure that he wasn’t going to continue. Seeing his mouth close, Kain assumed that was all he had to say.
With a small jump for a boost, the Moogle flapped his wings quicker than the eye could keep up with as he rose into flight. With such tiny wings, it was no surprise it took so much effort and speedy flapping to get him off of the ground. Though, he managed it and drifted up to land on the wall that Laroth was leaning against. That way, he was at a better height to talk to the man.
“Hello, I’m Kain the Moogle and I wanna be a Summoner, Kupo!”
Kain began, still sounding just as cheery as before. Although irritated by Laroth’s lack of optimism, he continued on as happy as his usual self.
“But, I need a Guardian, that’s where you come in, Kupo.”
The excited little fluff ball continued, explaining the situation to the stranger. He just hoped that he wasn’t too forward with his idea.
“You look like you could do with a job, am I right, Kupo?”

Laroth watched as the little thing covered its face, and then it began to flap its wings frantically to lift its weight from the floor to the wall at Laroth’s side. The small cat like thing seemed to be happy all the time; as thought Laroth’s harsh tone had no effect on it at all. As it perched on the wall it started to speak and introduced its self as Kain the Moogle; Laroth had heard of these things, and even played a game at the Golden Saucer many years ago involving a Moogle; but Laroth had never seen a Moogle in real life. The Moogle continued to talk in its cheery, jolly and high pitched voice. Laroth listened as Kain explained that he would need Laroth’s help as a Guardian.
Laroth stood still; he stared at the Moogle as he thought on its request. So he would join a small creature and become its Guardian, sounds like easy work, but on the other hand what would it require him to do he thought to himself. What if the Moogle was insane and just leading him to his death?
“So what would I be guarding you from? ...and why?”
He asked as though he was interested. But then, all of a sudden, another question entered his mind; one that he needed an answer to…something that was now in his mind…something he had been thinking hard about…
“You keep saying “Kupo”, what does it mean?”
He then just looked at Kain confused as to the strange word that he insisted on using at the end of every sentence he spoke.
( Post Word Count: 274 ) ( Thread Word Count : 917 )
Well, Laroth wanted to know more about the job, which was a good sign. At least he was interested. But details? Kain didn’t know much more than he had already said. I guess he could give a little more info, but not much…
“Well, I’m new to this Summoner thing myself, Kupo. But you would protect me from any monsters that would attack me as I travel all around Spira to gain Aeons, summoned creatures, at all of the Temples of Ye…”
Kain began, explaining everything he knew as it popped into his head as he paced a few steps back and forth across the wall. Though he stopped suddenly, walking and talking, as his mind registered the second question.
“Kupo!?”
The Moogle thought aloud. The question sort of took him by surprise; he and the rest of his race say it all the time, it’s completely normal to him – obviously not for a human he assumed.
“Kupo is a Moogle word, Kupo. It is just an expression used by my kind when speaking to end a sentence, it doesn’t mean any set thing, Kupo. It’s sometimes a word that we use to show emotion, Kupo.”
Kain explained the best he could. It really was a Moogle thing. Most humans wouldn’t understand the reasoning behind it. In fact, most of the time Kain didn’t even realise he was saying it. He just hoped it wasn't annoying Laroth too much, after all, he didn't want him to reject the offer just because of a repetative word. Though, surely he would get used to it after a short while with a chatty Moogle...

Laroth became confused because of the word, it was a word that meant absolutely nothing; yet it could show any kind of emotion for a Moogle. He decided not to question the little Moogle and his word any longer, instead he decided that it would be a good idea to ask more about this job offer that he was first approached about,
“So this Guardian thing…how long would I be your Guardian? And…erm…what’s the pay like?”
Laroth asked, after all he would need Gil to eat, or use an Inn…unless the Moogle had tents? But tents weren’t that good for Laroth; he could never get comfortable in the night, unlike the nice soft beds in an inn. Laroth always got a good nights sleep in a bed,
“And where will we be sleeping?”
Laroth’s third question seemingly came from nowhere and would no doubt have seemed a little random to Kain, but if Laroth was to be guarding him then he would need a solid nights sleep or he would be groggy and snappy for the rest of the day.
( Post Word Count: 187 ) ( Thread Word Count : 1104 )
How many questions did Laroth have? They just kept coming. Kain just hoped that he was getting all the details for a job that he was going to accept. I mean, he wouldn’t want to be here all day talking to this man if he was going to say ‘no’ in the end; he could be finding someone else in this time. But there was something about him, Kain just got a feeling he had already decided that he would become his Guardian.
“You’ll be my Guardian until we defeat the atrocious Sin, kupo!”
Kain said with an excited jump. He really was quite eager to face Sin, defeating him was his new goal. The Moogle only recently heard of Sin, but as soon as he did, he had to become a Summoner to slay the enormous monster.
But money and accommodation? Kain hadn’t really thought about it. He had a little gil that would get them started. Gently brushing his hand through his thick fur, the little Moogle pulled out a small bag tied with a string. Holding it from that string, he dangled it out before him to show Laroth.
“Don’t worry about it; I’ve got all expenses paid, kupo.”
Kain said with a confident and convincing smile. Although he didn’t have enough for their whole journey, Laroth wouldn’t know that. Though, fiend drops would keep them afloat… Hopefully.

Laroth looked confused as Kain mentioned Sin, did he really mean the gigantic monster that Laroth had heard about? Was this Moogle mentally ill or something? Did he not realise that Sin was like ten thousand times bigger than him? But never the less Laroth was interested to join with the little creature on its quest, after all Laroth was getting rusty and hadn’t fought in a while so could do with some training. Kain then dangled a bag of Gil in front of Laroth, so the little guy had some money; Laroth’s luck was picking up again,
“I’m in, together we shall defeat Sin!”
Laroth exclaimed with great enthusiasm
“Now lets get started,”
He continued before he ruffled the Moogle’s pompom that dangled over his head, turning away from the wall Laroth started to step but something told him that he had somehow annoyed Kain… perhaps he shouldn’t have ruffled the Moogle’s pompom after all…
( Post Word Count: 162 ) ( Thread Word Count : 1266 )
Good news and bad news. Good - Laroth was Kain's Guardian! Bad - Kain just got his pom-pom ruffled! The Moogle titled his head forward so that the red ball came down and so that he could grab hold it. His whole body was shaking as if he could explode at any second. He stayed in that position for a second as Laroth began walking away.
"Don't ever do that again, kupo!”
Kain said as he rushed past his new companion and hopped up into flight. He flapped his puny wings hard and fast to keep himself hovering directly in front of Laroth’s face. He then whipped out his winged staff and pointed it forward so that it was almost touching his Guardian’s nose.
“A Moogle's pom-pom is a very sensitive area, kupo!"
With that, he thought that his point was put across quite strongly. Laroth was probably not intimidated by Kain, but at least it would show him how much it annoyed the little Moogle and the large majority of his race.
Now that that was dealt with, Kain flew back and then spun around quickly trying to work out where he was again. He was new to this place and wasn’t exactly sure where he was going. Though, he did spot some things that he recognised, things that he had walked past earlier.
“Okay, we have to go to find the Maester of Yevon that I spoke to earlier, kupo. He’ll make me an Apprentice Summoner and we can get on our way, kupo!”

As Laroth began to walk away Kain flew past him and hover in front of his face, his little wings flapping rapidly. With his little winged pole pointed forward so that it was almost touching Laroth’s nose he angrily told Laroth to not touch his pompom, Laroth tried to keep a smile hidden as he found the angry Moogle funny; it’s threatening but still high pitched tone was hilarious. Managing to keep his laughter and smile inside Laroth then watched as Kain looked around, apparently they needed to go see a Maester of Yevon; what ever one of them was,
“So we go see this Maester, then what?"
Laroth asked seeming rather impatient as the Moogle looked around,
“And what does this guy look like?”
Laroth asked another question, this wasn’t like his usual self; normally he was quiet and hardly spoke to others. But this was different, this little thing was going to pay for his food, his place to sleep and in return Laroth had to fight; it was a win win situation.
( Post Word Count: 180 ) ( Thread Word Count : 1446 )
Kain seemed to miss the first question entirely as he tried to figure out where he was. But the second one he caught. What did he look like? Well, Human… The little Moogle wasn’t that great at descriptions, especially of other races. Think of it this way, if you were asked to describe a Moogle you’d probably say it was a Moogle and it’s color. A description that wouldn’t help you find a specific Moogle among a gathering of them – like a huge city for example. So, Kain wasn’t sure what to say.
“Errr, he’s bald and is wearing, ummm, a robe, kupo…”
He said, obviously not completely sure and blatantly hesitant.
“Wait… Over there, kupo!”
Kain exclaimed pointing his staff wildly. He then swooped down to the ground and began walking. Well, I say walking, he was bounding along with leaps for each step so that he would keep up with a human’s walking pace. As he did so, he tilted his head back to look up at Laroth beside him;
“So, we see this guy, he makes me an Apprentice Summoner and then we head off to a little island, I think it was called Besaid, kupo.”
And that’s how it happened, exactly as the little Moogle had planned. Both Kain and Laroth visited the Maester and he did indeed make Kain an Apprentice Summoner. With that, they found themselves aboard a ship that would take them where they needed to be.
