Outside of the smog and soot of the city of Midgar, a small contingent of volunteer soldiers slashed and fought with each other using various weapons. Among them was a young, raven-haired boy who looked more like he should be in high school than fighting in a war. His green eyes flashed fiercely as he sparred with his opponent, his short blade barely deflecting his enemy's longsword. Eventually, the boy lost his footing and fell to the ground, his weapon clattering onto a rock next to him. Not wasting any time- his opponent pointed his weapon at the boy's throat. "You are dead." The boy winced, frowning at the man as he helped the boy up. "You did, however, give a good fight... but good fights account to nothing on the battlefield unless you win them."
"Again."
The adolescent picked up his weapon again and dropped into a battle stance. The man shook his head and hefted his own blade again. "One of these days you're going to kill yourself, Tenebrae. I think you've had enough for today." Vale grimaced at the man, before shaking his head nad turning away.
"Fine then, I'll find someone else to spar with then, Palan. I need to get stronger- and you obviously won't help me to do so."
Palan quickly ran up in front of Vale and blocked his path. "You need rest, Tene- you've been fighting all day without so much as a bite to eat. Take a break, eat some food and maybe go back into town for a bit. A tired soldier is a bad one." Vale almost corrected the man by saying he didn't need any rest or food because he was a Lucavi before stopping himself. He probably wouldn't even be allowed to fight amongst the volunteers should he reveal his true race- Shinra would immediately swoop down and place him amongst the more seasoned warriors. Lucavi were as strong as ten men and couldn't be thrown in with the volunteer fodder.
"After this, Palan. One more fight... You never know when the enemy might be upon us. I need all the training I can get."
The man laughed heartily and patted Vale on the back. "More reason why you should rest, my friend. If the enemy popped up over that hill over there right at this moment he would defeat you in an instant due to your exhaustion." He pointed at the sun as it traveled in it's slow arc across the sky. "Tell you what, Tene- meet me back here at sundown and we will spar again. You'll learn how to fight in the dark was well as you fight in the light... which isn't all that well currently, I suppose. But it will improve your abilities nonetheless."
Vale nodded, defeated. He could wait a couple of hours, he supposed... and he was getting a bit hungry.
